This sculpture of the risen Christ was commissioned by Our Savior Lutheran Church in Raleigh, North Caroline. It is scheduled to be installed in bronze in March 2027.
The finished sculpture will be suspended from the ceiling over the altar. The following description is taken from the original proposal for the project:
In the context of the simple elegance of the sanctuary of Our Savior Lutheran Church, the crucifix suspended over the altar focuses the attention of the congregation on the saving work of Jesus throughout the service. The six foot cross itself is composed of clean lines, made of solid wood, and stained to echo the surrounding walnut accents of the sanctuary.
The sculpture of Christ is cast in bronze. His expression is alert as he looks out at the congregation with tenderness, as he does in the icon from Saint Catherine’s Monastery. He is free from the cross, but the visible wounds on his hands and feet recall his suffering, the marks of which are still present after his resurrection (John 20:20). His arms are raised in welcome.
